Student leaders gather for district‑wide retreat; board announces incoming student representatives

Student representatives and district staff described a student‑led leadership retreat last Friday that brought more than 350 students from every high school and middle school to Capital High School for workshops on advocacy, public speaking and cross‑school collaboration.
Student representative Roberts, who reported to the board, said the retreat emphasized student voice and practical leadership skills. “It was a perfect example of how that can look and of how we can center student voice in a way that’s not just symbolic, but is actually impactful,” Roberts said.
Superintendent Murphy and several directors praised students’ organization of the event. The board also heard that schools are scheduling many spring events, including international dinners and assemblies that showcased student art and writing collaborations.
Board action: Vice President (board leadership) announced the selection of incoming student representatives for the 2025–26 school year. The newly appointed student reps are Juniper Hummel Church (Avanti, entering 11th grade), Emma McDonald (ORLA, entering 11th grade) and Malachi Cordona (Capital High School, entering 11th grade). Current representative Veil will serve another year, the board said.
Why it matters: Student leadership programs provide training in civic skills and inform the board about student priorities. Directors said the retreat’s turnout and student planning signaled active student engagement across the district.
