April permits up: Blue Springs issues 21 single‑family approvals as construction activity rises

BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. — City staff reported to the Planning Commission on May 12 that construction permitting rose in April 2025, led by single‑family detached housing.

"We had 21 single family detached houses approved in the month of April. That's up about 13 from this time last year," the staff report stated. Staff said the city is at 52 single‑family permits year‑to‑date, an increase from the same point last year. There were no multifamily permits in April or year‑to‑date.

Staff reported 147 permits in April and 384 for the year to date, construction square footage up by roughly 130,000 compared with the prior year, and total construction cost approaching three times the value at the same point last year. Inspections were also up, by about 150 over the prior year in April.

Code enforcement activity increased as well: staff recorded about 120 code cases related to public health, safety and welfare and 170 total code cases in April. Staff said code cases typically rise and remain steady through the summer months.

Staff also reviewed recent planning and council items processed in April, including Blue Springs High School work on asphaltic surfaces, the Hy‑Vee third plat, McAtee Lane, a Tim Hortons project, a 500 RD Mies project and 7 Brew.

Planner Frey closed the report and answered commission questions. The commission received the report; no formal action was taken. During the meeting a staff member announced their last day with the city will be Friday, May 23; the employee thanked commissioners and said staff will continue city work.
