Court approves emergency callback pay policy for after-hours county calls

Erath County Commissioners approved an emergency callback pay policy designed to ensure employees who are called back to work for true emergencies receive premium pay even when paid time off or holidays affect overtime calculations for the week.
The policy creates a new pay category—premium pay at time-and-a-half—applicable to rare after-hours emergencies, and leaves determinations of whether an event qualifies as an emergency to the department head or elected official. The court said the policy was modeled in part on examples from other counties and local employers but tailored to local needs.
Commissioner Bock moved to approve the emergency callback pay policy; Commissioner Ray seconded and the court approved the policy by voice vote. County staff said the policy applies to only a few departments and rare events, and that HR staff and the county attorney had reviewed examples from other jurisdictions in drafting the language.
