Committee gives due pass to bill allowing retired educators to change retirement beneficiary

The House Education Committee voted to give a due pass recommendation to House Bill 251, which would permit retired Educational Retirement Board (ERB) members who previously designated a spouse as beneficiary to change that designation.
Representative Hall introduced the measure and said ERB previously did not allow such changes, while other systems had permitted them. Jacob Moll, deputy general counsel for the ERB, joined as an expert witness to explain administrative details. He confirmed the proposed change would give retired members an additional option and that the bill carried no identifiable fiscal impact in committee discussion.
Committee members did not record opposition in the hearing. Representative Bridal Calleiro moved a due pass motion and the motion received a second; the committee recorded a due pass without dissent. The bill will proceed with the committee’s recommendation to the next stage of consideration.
