Committee hears plan for statewide student information system and dashboards to improve data quality and transparency

Budget briefers told the House Education Committee the Public Education Department and legislative staff support a statewide student information system (SIS) and several data dashboard projects to improve data quality and access for districts, the department and the Legislature.
Both LFC and LESC included a $12,000,000 recommendation for a statewide SIS to improve data continuity as students move between schools and districts, to support a statewide IEP, and to reduce manual data entry by LEAs. The department also requested recurring funding for dashboards that provide financial transparency and updated attendance reporting; staff said those dashboards risk suspension without continued support.
Presenters cautioned that statewide IT projects have had mixed outcomes and stressed a phased, interoperable approach. PED said its CIO has recently retired and the department is filling that position; presenters highlighted the value of smaller, agile projects that can be scaled and integrated rather than single, large overhauls.
Committee members asked for project timelines, governance and interoperability plans. Presenters said they will provide project details and proposed governance language in follow‑up materials and referenced an upcoming House memorial proposing statewide data governance.
