LESC staff described a recommendation that would add $5,000,000 to the Indian Education Fund and LFC recommended $15,500,000 in one part of its recommendation for indigenous initiatives; staff said those LESC and LFC amounts are structured differently (one could be a three‑year appropriation).
The secretary said the increases are intended to honor tribal sovereignty and allow tribes to direct educational dollars for culturally appropriate services and improvement of outcomes for Native American students, who remain among lower‑performing groups academically. Presenters said the department has worked with tribal leaders in recent years to design the approach.
Committee members asked for follow‑up detail on how the multiyear funding would be distributed and on reporting and accountability provisions; staff said they will provide additional language and implementation detail at subsequent briefings.
