Committee backs memorial asking Legislature to study formal New Mexico–Ireland trade ties

The Commerce & Economic Development Committee voted unanimously to give a due pass to House Memorial 59, a memorial requesting that the Legislature study establishing an economic relationship and potential New Mexico–Ireland trade commission.

The sponsor explained that the memorial asks the Legislative Council to direct an interim committee addressing economic development to study the benefits of a formal relationship with Ireland and to make legislative recommendations. Supporters in the room included Skye Devore of the public who summarized their support in a brief, personal statement that played on the cultural ties: “According to 23 and Me, I'm Irish. I fed my baby's twins formula when they were little. I love cheddar cheese, and I used AI to write this speech.” The sponsor said the memorial seeks information and recommendations rather than creating a standing commission or committing funds at this time.

Committee members asked few questions and the clerk recorded a final tally for the due‑pass motion of 10 votes yes, 0 votes no. The memorial will be transmitted as a recommendation that the relevant interim committee evaluate potential trade and cultural ties with Ireland and report back if directed.

The memorial does not appropriate funds and does not by itself create a trade commission; it requests study and recommendations so the Legislature may consider next steps in a future session.
