Klamath County SD outlines $9.1 million Bonanza gym cost, priority list for repairs and upgrades

Klamath County SD staff on Monday gave the school board a comprehensive facilities update that listed completed projects, those in progress, and prioritized needs across the district, including major work at Gilchrist and multi‑million dollar gym projects at Bonanza and Chiloquin.
The presentation summarized completed work from fiscal 2023–24 and outlined 37 approved projects; 18 were complete by June 30. District staff said key completed items included new flooring at Mazama and bleachers at Henley High School, both finished under budget. Dennis (maintenance director) and Janet (district staff member) led the walk‑throughs and compiled a master project list that the facilities committee prioritized for action.
District staff said the Bonanza gym project cost about $9,100,000 in total, with $6,500,000 paid from ESSER grant funds and about $2,500,000 covered from the general fund. Kinsman Construction served as the primary contractor; the final contract value was reported under the overall building and acquisition ledger at $8.5 million for construction work after value engineering and some change orders. The new Lost River Community Center was reported as operational, with about $1,400,000 invested to date and $56,000 more expected for bleachers on order.
Staff described the Chiloquin gym as an in‑progress project: the district has expended roughly $2.6 million to date and reported a current bid/contracted price of $5,900,000 with completion anticipated in July for use in fiscal year 2025–26. The district said the Chiloquin design reuses existing locker rooms inside the school to reduce cost.
Other projects highlighted: - Mazama flooring: completed at $276,000 (budgeted $280,000). - Henley High bleachers: budgeted about $450,000; purchased for approximately $361,000. - Kino seismic project: funded with a Business Oregon grant of $2,400,000; staff reported the project finished slightly over budget (about $20,000) due to unexpected abatement work. - Crater Lake Learning Center: renovations in progress using a mix of SIA funds, ESSER and local construction excise tax; staff hope to finish by March (date not guaranteed).
The board was shown a prioritized list of repairs and replacements across campuses. Dennis and staff said Gilchrist needs substantial systems work (furnace, electrical, and classroom power), bathroom replacements, and other system upgrades; staff said those needs likely exceed amounts available in routine operational funds and will require targeted capital funding.
Janet told the board that money for the current slate of projects had already been set aside in the capital projects fund, using one‑time general fund resources the board approved previously. Several projects already were out for bid (examples: Chiloquin locker room, Henley Middle locker room, Gilchrist dust‑control), with bids opened mid‑January and anticipated discussion at the board’s January 20th meeting.
Board members asked about funding options, including bonds and timing. Staff said they will provide cost estimates as they finalize designs and will return to the board for approval of further steps and bids.
