Lake Havasu City — City parks staff told the council the new Main Street Commons performed well during the Desert Storm weekend and accommodated larger-than-normal crowds and vendors, though a resident later raised concerns about cracking in the Commons’ sidewalks.
City Manager Knutson and Park Superintendent Guy Reynolds briefed the council on the Desert Storm event, noting the Commons was used for the first time on Thursday night and handled heavy attendance and vendor load. ‘‘The commons worked out really, really well for this event,’’ Reynolds said, describing vendor configuration, heavy use of benches and a standing-room crowd at the food court. Staff reported only minor turf rutting that was expected to be corrected by seeding and composting, and no broken sprinkler heads or valve boxes.
During the call to the public, resident Michael Murray said he observed structural cracks in the Commons sidewalks after the event and warned those defects could worsen. Murray offered his engineering expertise pro bono to assess and help address the problem, arguing the city’s original scope or installation details may have allowed columns or other fixtures to sit in tension zones and cause premature cracking.
Parks staff and the mayor thanked volunteers and vendors for making the event successful and said staff will follow up on maintenance concerns. The council did not take formal action on repairs during the meeting but asked staff to investigate and coordinate corrective measures as needed.
