Board approves $49,898 purchase of Falcon hot‑box trailer for road patching

The Tillamook County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 29 approved a contract to purchase a Falcon hot‑box trailer from SealMaster Portland to support in‑place hot‑asphalt road patching.
"We went out for three quotes; the Falcon hot box trailer presented in front of you for $49,897.81 is the low cost of the three that were able to meet our specs," said Chris Laity, Tillamook County Director of Public Works, describing the purchase. Laity told the board the current hot box and other equipment date to the 1980s–1990s and the new trailer will allow staff to bring hot asphalt to spots that cannot be fully paved and need a longer‑term repair than cold mix.
Commissioners moved and approved the contract by voice vote. Staff said the purchase will be paid from the roads department special revenue fund and emphasized that road operations are funded separately from the county general fund.
The new hot‑box trailer will be used for intermediate repairs where full paving is not feasible and to extend the life of repairs compared with cold mix. No financing terms beyond the contract price were discussed in the public meeting.
