The Dallas City Council agreed by consensus to include 17 supplemental questions with the application that will be used to fill the council vacancy created when Councilor Verdon resigned April 3. Staff will post the application and questions beginning the next day and plans to accept applications through roughly May 12; qualified candidates who meet the charter residency and voter-registration requirements will be invited to present on May 19 for five-minute presentations.
City staff said the application mirrors the form used for appointments to boards, committees and commissions and that applicants must have lived in the city for at least one year prior to appointment and be registered voters in Oregon, per the city charter. Councilors added two changes to the prior question set: they asked staff to amend question P to include an explicit prompt about teamwork and shared leadership, and to add a new question R asking applicants to describe the last time they held a firmly held belief and changed it based on new information.
Staff said they would incorporate the amended and new questions, publish the application starting tomorrow, and include candidates’ written answers in the council packet ahead of the May 19 meeting. At that meeting councilors will deliberate and vote by ballot as defined in the council rules of procedure.
