Councilors received an update on the recruitment for a new police chief. Staff said the city solicited applications through December and into January, reviewed applicants and conducted screening interviews that narrowed the pool to four candidates.
According to staff, the four finalists will undergo a full assessment including testing, and there will be a public open house in about two weeks for residents to meet the candidates. The following day the finalists will face three sets of interview panels and additional assessments. Staff said the department hopes to narrow the field to a couple of candidates and conduct further interviews with city leadership.
Staff warned that post-offer background checks and assessments (for internal or external candidates) will likely take a month to a month-and-a-half and that the earliest a new chief could start is mid-May but more likely in May–June depending on internal/external hire and background checks. The council discussion indicated staff intends to allow overlap where feasible if an internal candidate is selected.
