Members of the Board of Selectmen discussed Monday a request from Park and Recreation to name an unnamed maintenance building in a town park after longtime employee Jim Welcome.
Selectmen reviewed the town ordinance that requires a petition signed by at least 50 registered voters to initiate a naming request, the formation of a naming committee that must include the primary petitioner, the town manager and a selectman, a committee review of financial impacts and an implementation schedule, a public hearing and a special town meeting to approve the name. The ordinance also states that once a town-owned facility receives a name it cannot be subject to another naming proposal for at least 10 years unless the board takes specific action.
A selectman said the petition process should proceed and offered to assist with the research and logistics; other selectmen voiced no objection to proceeding. The board did not take formal action but asked that any petition be submitted so the town can schedule the required naming-committee steps and public hearing.
Officials said the facility under consideration is a small maintenance building near the tennis courts and that the naming request would follow the ordinances and public-notice requirements before any final action at a special town meeting.
