Eversource to start Main Street gas-line work; one lane closed weekdays, informational meeting May 19

Town staff told the board that Eversource will soon begin a project to abandon old gas mains and install new lines on Main Street, primarily on the business side of the road. Work is expected to start in early May (weather dependent) and proceed in small, roughly 100–150-foot sections; contractors will not move to a new section until the prior segment is completed.

Officials said construction will occur 8 a.m.–4 p.m., Monday through Friday, with no routine weekend or overnight work. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane in the work area, and Eversource will hire two officers daily for traffic control. The town and CT DOT said contractors will be off the roadway at 4 p.m. and will not work on weekends except in emergencies with DOT approval. Officials said Eversource has done door-to-door outreach and mailed flyers; staff acknowledged Main Street parking and access will be disrupted for months, though DOT imposed a requirement to complete each 100–150-foot segment before moving on as a measure to reduce long-term disruption.
