Parks director reports Mainsgrove work, bike‑trail maintenance and garbage‑service change; county to seek public help for RAGBRAI

County parks staff provided the board with multiple operational updates, including work at Mainsgrove, bike‑trail maintenance, tree plantings and a planned vendor for county dumpster service.
Parks staff said the county is building a small utility building over a well at Mainsgrove to confine water‑treatment equipment and install a chlorine injection system. "We're hoping to have the building done this week so we can have the electrical put in," a parks staff member said. After installation the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) must inspect the work before the treatment system is placed in service.
Staff reported REC helped plant 325 trees at Mainsgrove and that seasonal programming (nature hikes, children’s programs and a migratory‑bird celebration) is under way. The parks crew is also clearing trees for new fencing along the bike trail and expects to install at least some fencing this fiscal year.
Staff described ongoing problems with motor vehicles and dirt bikes on the bike trail. The sheriff's office, staff said, is not enforcing off‑trail vehicle use within county areas outside city limits; county staff are coordinating with local city police where enforcement is possible inside city limits.
Because of repeated missed pickups and service problems, parks staff said the county is switching dumpster providers to a company that will serve the county's more northern parks at a lower cost and with better service, and staff said they have already arranged replacement plaques after thefts at park sites.
Staff said they plan a public presence at the RAGBRAI stop (where the trail intersects the route) and may take donations at an event table. The parks director listed meeting dates and upcoming events and said volunteers remain important to park maintenance; staff noted volunteer recruitment remains challenging.
No formal board action was taken on the updates; items were presented for information and coordination.
