Franklin County road department reports bridge removal, drainage repairs and staffing plans

The Franklin County road department provided a detailed operational update on drainage problems, bridge and road repairs, equipment procurement and personnel needs.
Road staff reported an ongoing problem at a lift station where inflow is bypassing the pump near the new building; the department has pulled covers and will investigate to avoid pump damage. Crews also noted a small roof leak at the engineer’s office following a recent furnace installation; the county plans to have a contractor inspect the roof and the vent piping.
The department said it will perform deck overlays at a bridge over the West Fork, remove a bridge on Indigo Avenue and haul materials to a landfill. Crews are addressing numerous plugged field tiles and drainage issues that have surfaced after a shift from dry conditions to heavier rains; staff said roots and washed sod have revealed additional tile problems countywide.
Equipment moves and procurement were discussed. Staff reported quotes are being evaluated for new dump trucks (Freightliner, Mack, Volvo and Western Star were mentioned) and that a damaged truck frame is being straightened and repaired. The department is exploring renting a tractor to pull trailers during repairs and will try to secure favorable rental terms.
Personnel and scheduling: the department plans to hire two summer maintenance workers, continues to refine grader and truck routing responsibilities, and noted some special-meeting scheduling for board liaisons. Crews also anticipate Durapatcher and rock work when weather allows.
No formal board action was taken on road projects at this meeting; the drainage minutes were approved earlier in the session.
