Hunterdon County creates $500,000 municipal law-enforcement equipment grant program

Hunterdon County commissioners on April 15 voted to create a municipal law-enforcement equipment grant program funded at $500,000 to help local jurisdictions purchase safety and traffic equipment.
The resolution, approved by roll call vote, sets aside $400,000 for municipalities that have their own law-enforcement entities and $100,000 for municipalities that do not, the county’s administrative buyer told the board during the meeting. The resolution directs a review panel to draft the application packet and scoring criteria before the county issues the grant solicitation.
Why it matters: County officials said the grant is intended to help municipalities acquire items with useful lives of several years — examples given included trailer-mounted speed signs and traffic-safety beacons — and to address equipment needs identified during budget planning for fiscal 2025.
How it will work: The review panel named in the board’s discussion will include the county council, Sheriff Fred Brown, and Public Safety Director Braden Faghey. That panel will prepare the application materials and scoring rubric and then release the application to municipalities, the administrative buyer said. Specific award amounts to individual municipalities will be determined during that later review process.
Vote and procedure: Commissioner Soloway moved the motion to authorize creation of the program; Commissioner Rich seconded. The motion passed by roll call vote with all commissioners present voting yes. County staff said more program details and application dates will be announced after the review panel completes its work.
The resolution implementing the program follows the county’s April 1 introduction of the fiscal year 2025 budget, which includes the $500,000 funding allocation.
