Allen County accepts $10,000 IDEM grant for tire‑recycling and cleanup

The Allen County Commissioners voted March 28 to accept a $10,000 grant from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to support county tire recycling and cleanup work.
Stacy Hubbard of the Allen County Department of Environmental Management said the funds will be used to conduct community recycling events and to pick up illegally dumped tires around the county. “Last year, over 3,500 tires were cleaned up at 208 locations,” Hubbard said, adding that a one‑day community tire event on Meyer Road serviced 235 residents and filled two semi‑trailers of tires.
Hubbard said the county’s tire vendor is Liberty Tire of North Liberty, Indiana; the vendor separates tires for retreading or shredding and processes metal and fiber commodities for market. Commissioners asked about the cost per trailer for disposal; Hubbard estimated between $1,600 and $1,800 per trailer. She said the current IDEM grant term is 18 months and that last year’s award was completed in four months.
The commission approved acceptance of the grant with no recorded opposition. Staff said the funding will pay for targeted pickups of illegally dumped tires, continued community events and outreach to residents about disposal options.
