County approves INDOT design contract to boost visibility at unsignalized intersections

Allen County commissioners voted March 21 to approve an INDOT contract for project design to upgrade sign and marking visibility at unsignalized intersections throughout the county.
Bill Harmon of the Allen County Highway Department said the improvements primarily target two-way stop intersections on through roads. The design will include features such as double 'stop ahead' postings, larger stop signs and larger stop bars; the county will use the largest available sign sizes where appropriate.
The map in the contract identifies the locations; a commissioner later counted 54 intersections that will be impacted by the additional signage. Harmon said the locations are aimed at reducing drivers running through stop-controlled intersections, a problem he described as occasionally resulting in accidents and fatalities.
A commissioner moved and seconded approval of the contract with INDOT; the motion carried by voice vote. Harmon said INDOT standards specify sign sizes depending on traffic volume and location and that the department will apply the largest sizes available for the listed locations.
