Floyd County to transfer small parcel to Georgetown, contingent on approvals, to realign road and park access

Floyd County commissioners approved a joint resolution and authorized a quitclaim deed that would transfer a parcel adjacent to Georgetown Park to the Town of Georgetown, contingent on approvals by three governing bodies.
Rene Geary, Georgetown town manager, told the board the parcel is the final piece the town needs to consolidate ownership from Whisman Road to Georgetown Lane so the town can relocate Lois Lane away from the railroad tracks and improve access for fire trucks and school buses. Geary said the consolidation would help safety and provide a contiguous park area of about eight acres.
Commissioners amended a motion to approve the joint resolution and quitclaim deed and to authorize execution of the deed outside of a meeting if the county council and the Georgetown town council also approve the transfer. A commissioner said final execution would be contingent on all three governing bodies’ approvals.
The board approved the amended motion by voice vote and instructed staff to coordinate execution once all required bodies approved the joint resolution and deed. No purchase price was discussed at the meeting; the transfer was described as a quitclaim deed and part of local land transfers between the county and the town.
Commissioners thanked the town manager for the presentation and moved to return the matter to staff for final signatures after the other governing bodies’ approvals.
