Commissioners approve AT&T and Nordicom contracts for phone and internet after staff outline savings

Floyd County commissioners approved three telecommunications contracts covering the county phone system and an internet circuit, citing equipment age, projected monthly savings and one-time installation costs.
IT Director Gary Bierman told the board first that parts of the county phone system were about 10 years old and the server more than five years old. He said a new phone system would cost approximately $30,000 to $32,000 for migration and new phones, and that the monthly service cost for a new configuration would be “just under $4,000 a month.” Bierman said that, based on his figures, the new system would pay for itself in about four months.
Bierman also said the county was reassessing an internet circuit out of Nova Park, which he said currently costs approximately $13,100 and could be reduced to about $115 per month after reconfiguration; he reported no initial setup charge on that service. Commissioners discussed whether to approve the contracts together or separately. County staff read contract IDs into the record: the first AT&T contract, ID 5020831; the second AT&T contract, ID 5026519; and a separate Nordicom contract.
Commissioners approved the Nordicom contract first by unanimous consent and then approved the AT&T contracts—motions carried after a roll call for approval. County staff said recurring charges would be covered from utilities and that the contracts include multiple locations and services as presented.
The board voted to authorize signature lines as necessary so the contracts can be executed.
No additional conditions were attached to the approvals.
