The Buffalo Board of Education took several formal actions at its April 9 meeting. Key outcomes:
1) Board resolution opposing US House funding cuts — adopted unanimously The board voted to oppose proposed reductions to federal education, child nutrition and Medicare funding included in the U.S. House proposals then under consideration. The resolution called on members of the U.S. House to vote against measures that would cut Title I, Title II or Title III funding, reduce school meal eligibility or block-grant education funding. The motion was adopted unanimously by roll call.
2) Appointment of interim superintendent — adopted unanimously The board adopted a resolution naming Dr. Will Kerestes as interim superintendent effective July 1, 2025, to serve until a permanent successor is appointed. The resolution directed the board president to execute the agreement attached as exhibit A.
3) Authorization to negotiate and execute third amended settlement and extend transportation agreement — passed (two opposed) The board authorized the superintendent to negotiate and execute a third amended settlement agreement resolving litigation (state supreme court index number 2009-011969) and to execute additional documents to extend the district's transportation agreement with the Charter School for Applied Technologies for up to five years with terms no less favorable than current terms. The motion passed with two board members recorded as opposed.
4) Consent agenda and minutes approvals — approved The board approved meeting minutes (March 19 and April) and the consent agenda by roll call. Several members recorded exceptions or recusals on specific consent agenda items during roll call as noted in the minutes; the overall consent agenda passed.
Nut graf: The votes combined policy advocacy at the federal level, an interim leadership appointment and authorization for legal and contractual steps related to a settlement and charter transportation. The settlement/transportation authorization drew the only recorded opposition.
Provenance and vote records: The roll-call record for the US House resolution and interim superintendent appointment appears in the transcript after the resolution readings; the settlement/transportation motion and vote are recorded later in the meeting record.
Ending: The board directed staff to proceed under the terms of the adopted motions and noted that related documents would be executed by the superintendent and board president as authorized.
