County officials used the May 13 council meeting to walk through recent reassessment notices and how residents can appeal.
Officials said the Department of Local Government Finance (DLGF) is still implementing House Bill 1 and that Baker Tilly’s financial projections for the county are expected in early June. The assessor’s office identified errors in at least two, possibly three, neighborhoods and is reworking those Form 11 notices; staff said updated Form 11s will be sent when corrected.
Council members and staff emphasized that the values shown on the Form 11 are for the coming tax year, not the tax bills residents received in April, and reminded residents the deadline to file an appeal is June 15. A staff member recounted a staffer whose assessment rose by about $100,000, roughly doubling that home’s assessed value, as an example of the changes being reviewed.
Officials directed constituents with questions to the assessor’s website, the assessor’s office in person, or the county commissioners’ website for information on the appeals process. Staff also noted Indiana Gateway provides a breakdown of how tax dollars are distributed and said that roughly 80% of a typical total tax allocation is split between New Albany city and the school system, according to the presentation at the meeting.
No formal action was taken; staff said Baker Tilly will present financial projections when rules from the DLGF allow such projections to be prepared.
