The Bedford Conservation Commission on April 22 agreed to rely on the town of Bedford’s web and social-media channels rather than create a separate commission Facebook page, and took steps to formalize a shorter mission statement and motto.
Joanne Smith volunteered to coordinate social-media posts and to work with staff when posts must be added to the town page. Members discussed a posting cadence of two to four items per month, building a three-month content plan on a shared drive and meeting quarterly to review. Grant Killian, commission chair, and other members said they preferred using the town’s established audience rather than maintaining a standalone page that would require more frequent original content.
On the commission’s mission statement, members reviewed several condensed drafts and leaned toward a concise structure that states the overarching goal and the principal actions the commission takes to achieve that goal — for example, protecting the town’s natural resources by acquiring and stewarding land, advising planning and zoning boards, and promoting education and outreach. Commissioners agreed to enumerate explicitly that the commission advises the town planning and zoning boards so the public understands the commission’s scope.
Members also chose a motto during discussion. After comparing two versions, the commission expressed preference for the original-blue variant phrasing, recorded in notes as “Preserving Bedford today for tomorrow.” Commissioners said the motto and the revised mission statement will be circulated for final edits in advance of the next meeting.
