Portage city officials and council members agreed to continue consideration of both the police and utilities collective bargaining agreements to a special meeting on May 12 after final contract documents arrived late in the day.
Mayor Bonta explained that the final documents for both contracts were submitted to the city late and that city staff and councilors needed additional time to review. "My hope or recommendation would be to continue this to the meeting next week on, Monday, the twelfth," he said. The police chief told council members that many officers had come to the meeting to show support for the police contract and that the union had voted in favor of the agreement. The chief offered to provide comparative wage‑study information to council members ahead of the resumed discussion.
Councilmembers moved and seconded a motion to table both agreements to May 12; the motion carried by voice vote. City staff said the utility contract will be voted on by the utility board on Thursday, then forwarded as appropriate; the board of works would be involved next in the approval sequence if required.
