Vanderburgh County Council on Feb. 5 approved a series of staffing requests across county departments, voting by voice to authorize the creation or refill of multiple vacancies and a single interdepartmental transfer.
The council approved Superior Court’s amended request to fill a part‑time liaison position in the juvenile division after Judge Gary Schuette clarified the post is primarily for out‑of‑court duties and to assist law enforcement and electronic home detention monitoring. "We have had up to 18 young people on home detention, and, frankly, that's just too many for one person to monitor," Schuette said during the meeting.
Other approvals included authorization to fill an assistant chief deputy bookkeeper in the county clerk’s office (presented by Darby Bridal, chief deputy for the clerk), an inheritance tax bookkeeper in the treasurer’s office, a deputy sheriff in the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office, a part‑time special deputy tied to the school safety agreement, and a secretary/deputy vacancy in the coroner’s office. Annie Miller, chief deputy at the coroner’s office, said the request is to replace an employee who is retiring.
The council also approved two prosecutor’s office requests (an enforcement officer supervisor and a receptionist). Diana Merce, identified as Vanderburgh County prosecutor, said the office will "hire from within on both of those" vacancies.
County engineer John Stoll asked for and received authorization to fill an administrative assistant vacancy in his office following a retirement. "She's done a great job," Stoll said of the employee leaving after more than 25 years.
The council approved a part‑time 4‑H assistant position and amended pay for extension staff presented by Megan Hofer of Purdue Extension, and a request from county highway to fill an administrative assistant position. A single budget transfer (from CCPI to work release) was also approved by voice vote.
Most motions were taken by voice with the chair calling for "ayes" and no recorded roll call; the council recorded no objections on those items and the chair declared the motions carried. The council also approved a consolidated salary ordinance packet after removing the Superior Court court‑reporter reclassification item for separate study by the personnel committee.
The council scheduled its next regular meeting for March 5, 2025, at 3 p.m.
Ending: The approved requests are to be posted and filled according to departmental hiring procedures; several were described as grant‑funded or budgeted in the current fiscal year, and departments indicated they will proceed with recruitment now that council authorization is in hand.
