LPC approves neon corner sign for Upside Pizza at 2878 Broadway in Morningside Heights

The Landmarks Preservation Commission on Feb. 25 approved a neon corner sign and painted sign band for a new Upside Pizza location at 2878 Broadway and 112th Street in Morningside Heights.

Sign fabricator Noble Signs and owner Norman Grossman proposed a two‑piece aluminum case sign with hand‑painted background lettering and single‑tube neon (red and white) that wraps the storefront corner with a rounded edge. The cases are 12 inches deep and will be mounted as close as code permits; the bottom of the sign will meet the 10‑foot clearance requirement above the sidewalk. The design uses automotive enamel paint and aluminum construction to avoid long‑term corrosion problems seen in older porcelain signs. The applicant said the corner is dark at night and the neon would provide needed pedestrian illumination.

The applicant noted they had coordinated with Columbia University (landlord) and the community board prior to filing and that installation will use modern materials and stainless‑steel/aluminum hardware to limit penetrations and corrosion. The commission recorded a unanimous vote in favor.
