The Landmarks Preservation Commission approved replacement roofing at 810 East 19th Street in the Fiske Terrace–Midwood Park Historic District on April 1, 2025, allowing a hunter‑green asphalt shingle to match a long-standing roof color on the wood-frame colonial revival house.
Owners Michael and Aviva Suchar told commissioners the roof required prompt repair after animal damage and that the exact original shingle color is no longer manufactured; a hunter‑green GAF Timberline shingle matched the existing repair sample closely. The application could not be processed at staff level because historically available asphalt shingle palettes were limited to dull browns and grays when the house was built, and staff therefore presented the proposal to the commission.
Commissioners and staff reviewed neighborhood examples of colored roofs and noted that Fisk Terrace is characterized by freestanding houses with varied paint and roofing colors. Several commissioners, and the applicant, said the green roof has been on the house for decades and that a matching replacement preserves that appearance. The commission voted to approve the replacement, finding it consistent with the house’s history of change and compatible with other roofs in the historic district.
