The Landmarks Preservation Commission approved a binding report on April 8 permitting landscape alterations at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center, the adaptive reuse of the former First Reformed Church at 153‑10 Jamaica Avenue in Jamaica, Queens. The work will create an accessible curved walkway, restore brownstone entry steps and handrails, repair a front fountain, and remove non‑historic infrastructure and a northeast gate added during a 2008 renovation.
Leonard Jacobs, executive director of the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, and Simon Eisinger of Landschener Design Architects presented the proposal, which the team said aims to eliminate trip hazards and provide an accessible route to the building’s entry and elevator tower while preserving a significant portion of the front lawn. Eisinger said the front garden was regraded in the mid‑1980s and that the proposed work does not alter the building fabric.
The Victorian Society in America and the Commission’s staff offered supportive testimony, calling the proposal “sensitive and harmonious” with the landmark and noting the loss of any earlier historic landscape features. Commissioners commended the project for delivering accessibility while retaining open lawn and planting areas. The motion to approve, made by Commissioner Chapin and seconded by Vice Chair Bland, passed 8–0 with Commissioner Ginsburg recused; the record notes preservation staff will oversee details such as lamppost replication and brownstone inlays.
Next steps: Staff will work with the applicant on final materials, handrail and lamp details, and any sidewalk work that lies outside the Commission’s jurisdiction.
