HAYSVILLE, Kan. — The Haysville City Council on May 12 voted to deny a temporary special-event permit that would have allowed a wine-tasting at the Village Christmas event on public property.
Staff described the requested permit as a limited wine tasting to be held inside the library meeting room while family activities would continue in adjacent spaces. Councilmembers raised concerns about permitting a wine-tasting during an event that runs from about 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and includes many children.
During the discussion, council members asked how the tasting would be regulated, whether identifications would be checked and whether the wine could leave the library area. Staff said the tasting would be restricted to the library meeting room, would require identification checks, and would not permit attendees to take alcohol out of the room.
Despite those conditions, a motion to deny the temporary special-event permit for the Village Christmas wine tasting was made, seconded and approved by the council. The council’s action means no wine-tasting component will be authorized for the upcoming Village Christmas event on public property.
