The Merriam City Council unanimously approved a five‑year contract to purchase Axon Standards for police reporting, training and evaluations and to terminate the city’s existing contract with its prior software vendor.
Police leadership told the council Axon Standards would allow the department to centralize reports, use-of-force documentation, evaluations and training records into the same vendor that supplies the department’s body and in-car cameras. “Basically, what Axon Standard is going to provide us is, we have lots of different, reports that we gather and collate, to include our use of force,” Chief McLaughlin said during his presentation.
Staff told council the department had previously engaged a different vendor to meet state submittal requirements but that the product did not meet expectations. Axon — the vendor that provides the department's cameras — offers software that staff judged to meet the city's needs; implementation will follow contract termination and an implementation period, and the department noted legacy data cannot be imported into Axon but will be retained outside the Axon system.
Council discussion and approval: Council Member Sowers moved approval of the Axon Standards purchase; another council member seconded and the council voted 8–0 to authorize the purchase. Staff said there is no early-termination fee for the prior vendor (the previous contract was near an automatic renewal and the city expects credit for any prepaid months) and anticipated the new product would not be fully online until around January following implementation.
Ending: Council approved the Axon contract 8–0; staff will complete contract termination details with the prior vendor and schedule implementation.
