The Town of Merrillville Town Council accepted a Board of Zoning Appeals approval Feb. 11 to allow a mechanic shop at 5960 Broadway, petitioner Ahmad Zaglar and owner JST Properties.
Sheila Shine of the Planning and Building Department summarized the petition and the BZA action: the location is in a C-2 community commercial zoning district, the petitioner plans a full‑service auto repair operation (diagnostics, engine work, oil changes, exhaust and related services) and stated the business will adhere to parking and waste-disposal conditions. Planning staff and the BZA placed conditions on the approval, including a prohibition on cars remaining on the property for more than 20 days, no painting or body work, hours of operation limited to 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, a limit of five employees, and a prohibition on overnight parking of cars from an adjacent used-car lot.
Attorney Adam Swartz, appearing for the petitioner, confirmed the representation and said the current operator will remain on site until transition. Council members emphasized the importance of enforcing the parking limit and compliance with waste-disposal and lighting standards.
Motion and vote: Councilwoman Uslak moved to accept the BZA approval with the conditions as reported by planning; the council voted by roll call with seven in favor, none opposed.
Planning staff said they will monitor compliance and enforce the BZA conditions; the item will return to code enforcement or planning staff for follow-up if complaints arise.
