The Town of Merrillville Town Council approved the hire of Gerald "Jerry" McCartney as the town’s parks director on Feb. 11 after the manager reported the offer had been extended and accepted.
Town Manager Joe Griffin told the council the administration conducted an executive-session interview under the municipal code (referred to in the meeting as MCC section 13.5-1) and extended an offer that McCartney accepted. Griffin said the candidate asked for two weeks to notify his current employer but that the current employer instead allowed an earlier start; Griffin said McCartney will begin Thursday.
Councilwoman Kisha Hardaway made the motion to hire McCartney; a second was recorded and the council approved the hire by voice vote. Griffin said McCartney’s first meeting will be to meet with the consultant working on the town’s park master plan.
No additional compensation details were discussed at the public meeting. Staff indicated the hire was within the manager’s authority to offer under the cited municipal code, and council members said it would be appropriate to show support for the new hire at a future meeting.
