The Maryville Town Council voted unanimously Feb. 25 to enter into a memorandum of agreement with the City of Hobart to form a Route 30 joint task force, Councilman Pettit said. The task force is to study shared infrastructure and transit challenges along Route 30 and coordinate pursuit of state and federal funds.
“[The purpose is to] establish the task force to study the shared challenges and resources pertaining to the infrastructure and transit issues of Maryville and Hobart, including increased traffic congestion, insufficient pedestrian infrastructure, and limited transit options,” Pettit said when moving the motion. The council recorded the motion as seconded and the roll call showed six votes in favor.
Pettit said the steering committee is intended to marshal resources across municipal boundaries so the communities can “maximize the effective solutions” to shared problems. He indicated a formal resolution supporting the joint effort would follow.
The council did not specify an exact membership list for the steering committee at the meeting. Pettit said the item follows workshop discussions the night before and that the agreement will be followed by a resolution on the council agenda in an upcoming meeting.
The vote was procedural and the council did not appropriate funds for the task force at the February meeting; staff were not asked to present a budget during the discussion.
