MERRILLVILLE, Ind. — Town parks staff told the Town Council Tuesday that a contractor dispute has delayed final decisions on new flooring at the Dean & Barbara White Community Center and that the town is seeking security-camera quotes for parks and the community center.
Jerry (Parks and Recreation staff) said the town received an installation/repair quote from ICC that was higher than a prior quote from TSI, and that CORE — the general contractor referenced in the meeting — is running a forensic test with TSI to determine the cause of the flooring problem. Jerry said CORE told staff it will “go through every measure to make sure that we get taken care of,” and Pettit later said the general contractor Core Geist Van Buren has agreed to assume the cost.
Nut graf: The town is temporarily holding off on replacing the floors while contractors complete tests to determine responsibility. Parks staff expect an update at the next meeting and are moving ahead with plans to improve after-hours security in parks.
Parks staff also reported that AJ from Next Tech Solutions performed a walkthrough of town parks and the community center and is preparing a quote to install cameras. Jerry said the town is waiting for that quote to determine the scope and cost of increased video monitoring. The meeting record shows the parks department has already begun plantings and other improvements at town parks; staff noted the arrival of hanging baskets and other seasonal landscaping.
Council discussion clarified that the flooring subcontractor and CORE disagree on installation methods and materials; a forensic analysis is underway. Jerry said ICC’s quote to replace the floor was higher than the amount TSI proposed for remediation. Pettit praised CORE’s willingness to assume cost while the investigation proceeds.
Ending: Parks staff said they will provide a status update at the next meeting and that the town will proceed with camera and security improvements once the Next Tech Solutions quote is received.
