City manager updates: infrastructure planning, Central Avenue paving, mowing rules and summer events

The city manager provided multiple operational updates during the May 20 City Commission meeting, covering infrastructure planning, paving, stormwater rules, and upcoming summer events.
Staff said engineering had prepared cost estimates for infrastructure to serve anticipated growth to the north and southwest; the materials will be brought to the commission for future discussion as the city plans for development. The manager also reported that Central Avenue paving is proceeding, with milling mostly complete and only the center lanes remaining before final adjustments and cleanup.
On neighborhood maintenance, the manager reminded residents that "city regulation prohibits the mowing of grass or placing the grass placing grass clippings into the street." Staff explained clippings can clog storm drains in heavy rain, potentially causing localized flooding, and advised residents to aim mowers away from streets or bag clippings.
On federal programs, staff said the city is in the planning phase for the Safe Streets for All (SS4A) safety action planning program, which will focus specifically on safety and identify projects eligible for federal implementation funding. The manager said the recently completed transportation master plan will help shorten the SS4A process.
The manager also previewed summer activities — Thankful Thursdays, the Fourth of July and the Celebration of Freedom — and noted the local baseball team (the Walnuts) is still seeking host families for players. No formal actions were taken; staff said more detailed proposals will return to the commission for future consideration.
