Euclid commission removes 17 candidates from fire entry list; nine at applicants' request

The Euclid Civil Service Commission on May 6 approved the April 15 meeting minutes and voted to remove 17 candidates from the Euclid Fire Department’s certified entry-level list, the commission said at a brief meeting.
Chief Womack of the Euclid Fire Department told the commission it sought removal of nine candidates who requested their own withdrawal from the department’s entrance exam and eight candidates for cause. “We would like ... remove the following candidates by request from our entrance exam,” Chief Womack said, reading the list of names and candidate numbers.
The nine removed at the applicants’ request were candidate 20, Santino Pieruzzoli; 24, Joseph Panzani; 31, Anthony Kowalski; 77, Brandon Hall Karstarphen; 81, Jake Morad; 88, Gavin Jensen; 91, John Kohanski; 93, Shannon Contreras; and 97, Thomas Mostar. The commission approved the removals by voice vote.
The commission also removed eight candidates for cause. Chief Womack said the reasons included interview problems, background issues, a candidate who did not show for an interview and a candidate who is starting medic school in 2026 and thus no longer meets the department’s current hiring need for paramedics. Specifically, the commission removed candidate 22, Ellen Nelson (interview issues); 33, Michael Johnston (interview issues); 35, David Ross (interview issues); 51, Christian Ammons (starts medic school in 2026); 61, Benjamin Knox (background issue); 70, Daniel Spencer (interview issue); 71, Nathan Burke (background issue); and 73, Jacob Beam (did not appear for interview).
Commissioners approved the April 15 minutes by unanimous voice vote before taking the candidate removal actions. The meeting record shows Commissioners Robinson, Rucker and Kanakas were present for the votes.
The session also included a brief roll call and a reading of current job postings: light equipment operator for streets and sewers (Department of Public Service), lead animal control officer (Department of Police) and summer camp counselor (Department of Recreation).
The commission adjourned at about 2:15 p.m.
