County auditor launches property-tax notification sign-up after state tax law changes

St. Joseph County officials on May 13 announced a new property-tax and assessment notification option on the county website to keep residents informed as state property-tax rules change.
John Murphy, St. Joseph County auditor, said the office and the assessor's office have received a large volume of public inquiries since the passage of state legislation on property taxes (referred to in the meeting as SB 1). Murphy said his office worked with the assessor and county staff to add a property-tax notification option to the county's CivicReady "Stay Connected" distribution lists on the county homepage.
Abby Doyle, chief deputy auditor, said residents can sign up via a QR code on flyers at upcoming town halls or by visiting sjcindiana.gov and clicking "Stay Connected." She said the new option allows residents to receive email updates specifically for property-tax and assessor alerts, separate from other county notifications such as traffic alerts.
Doyle said the notifications will be used to inform residents when the Department of Local Government Finance (DLGF) and the state release forms, guidance and implementation steps—for example, on how income limits for over-65 property-tax adjustments will be handled—so residents who have signed up will receive timely information. The first town hall mentioned in the meeting is May 17 at Howard Park at 10 a.m.
Murphy provided a county contact number for property-tax questions: (574) 235-9668, option 3. County staff emphasized the sign-up is intended to be one of several outreach methods, including town halls, social media and press releases, to keep taxpayers informed as state agencies issue guidance.
