Juvenile Justice Center renews planned fire-protection service agreement; county says cost is down from last year

The St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners approved renewal of a planned service agreement with Johnson Controls Fire Protection for the Juvenile Justice Center (JJC) during its May 13 meeting.
Kristen Cooper, controller for the JJC, asked commissioners to renew the agreement to cover the facility's annual fire-alarm inspection, which she said is required by the National Fire Protection Association. Cooper said the contract cost will be paid from the county's LIT fund.
When commissioners asked how the renewal price compared with the prior year, Cooper said last year's cost was $28,000 and that, after consulting maintenance staff, the office had removed coverage for repairs it did not expect to use. Cooper said the new contract is "almost $16,000 less than last year" and that the county will receive a 20% discount on any repairs under the renewed agreement.
Commissioners approved the renewal by voice vote. Cooper said she consulted with maintenance and concluded that removing full repair coverage reduced unnecessary expense while preserving inspection coverage required by NFPA standards.
The meeting record did not include the exact new contract dollar amount on the public record; the JJC controller provided the cost comparison and discount terms during the discussion.
