The St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners on April 29 approved two resolutions that start the legal process to sell county-owned parcels acquired through tax‑sale certificates to adjacent property owners.
Under Indiana law, the board may offer tax‑sale–acquired parcels to adjacent owners; the resolutions authorize notice and a sealed‑bid process that gives adjacent owners an opportunity to bid. County counsel explained that notice will be provided to adjacent property owners, bids will be opened in mid‑May, and the highest bidder will be awarded the property and proceed to closing.
The board approved Resolution R‑10‑C‑2025 and Resolution R‑11‑C‑2025 by unanimous voice votes. Commissioners recorded “Aye” votes during roll call for both measures. No amendments or conditions were added during the meeting.
County counsel said that after notice is sent and bids are received (the timetable discussed calls for bids in the third week of May), the county will complete the closing process with the successful bidders. No specific parcel addresses or minimum bid amounts were presented during the discussion.
Because the resolutions only authorize the statutory sale process, the board did not transfer title at the meeting and provided no direction beyond initiating notice and the sealed‑bid process.
