Commissioners approve vendor work to correct jail fire-safety deficiencies before May reinspection

St. Joseph County commissioners on April 22 approved a professional services proposal from VFP Fire Systems to correct fire-protection deficiencies found in a recent inspection of the county jail and to prepare for a May 11 reinspection by the South Bend Fire Department.
Bree Roberts, director of physical assets, said the proposal covers the five-year internal inspection requirements and gauges that require testing or replacement. "Per correspondence from South Bend Fire Department, basically, we have until May 11 to correct these deficiencies when the facility will be reinspected," Roberts said. She asked that funding come from the Board of Commissioners’ capital fund under the Building and Structures account.
Commissioners moved and seconded approval; the motion carried by voice vote (Commissioner Morton — aye; Commissioner Hazen — aye; Commissioner Maxeyer — aye). Roberts said the work is intended to restore code compliance prior to the scheduled reinspection. The board authorized the county to proceed with the VFP proposal; staff did not provide a detailed cost breakdown at the meeting beyond indicating the request would be charged to the capital fund.
