Council authorizes Redevelopment Commission to fund Deaver Road sanitary sewer to serve Toyota facility

The Columbus City Council on April 15 authorized the Redevelopment Commission to expend more than $500,000 from the central allocation area to fund a sanitary sewer line along Deaver Road to serve the new Toyota Material Handling facility.

City staff said the Redevelopment Commission held a public hearing on March 24 and unanimously approved contracting Bowen Engineering for the sanitary sewer work to extend service to a proposed 295,000-square-foot Toyota Material Handling facility. The motion approved by the redevelopment commission was for a not-to-exceed amount of $3,791,431.

City utilities staff said Columbus City Utilities will perform construction and oversee the project. Roger (city utilities) explained sizing decisions are based on conservative standard calculations tied to square footage and acreage and designed to allow future additional connections in the area.

Councilors characterized the expenditure as part of a multi-agency partnership — engineering, Columbus City Utilities and redevelopment — and said the project will support nearby development and provide additional utility connections. The council passed the resolution by roll call vote recorded at the meeting.

The redevelopment commission’s amended funding authorization and procurement approach will be placed on file with council materials as part of the meeting record.
