Columbus council members on May 6 passed on first reading a set of salary-ordinance amendments that reclassify positions in multiple departments. Staff said the changes require no additional appropriation and are intended to address recruitment and retention needs and to align job duties with current departmental work.
Key changes described by staff included converting a part-time IT technician role to a full-time enterprise-architect-style position and renaming a manager-level IT position to network-security-engineer; adding a deputy controller position in Finance and adjusting several Parks position ranges to reduce turnover among assistant team leaders and to staff new programming such as child watch and a teaching kitchen. Parks staff explained the request was to adjust classifications and ranges so they could recruit and retain personnel; any pay-range increases beyond title changes were to be considered in next year’s broader salary ordinance/budget.
Council members requested more detail on the overall fiscal impact if all positions were filled at midpoint and asked staff to provide consolidated numbers ahead of future budget discussions. Staff said those figures would be provided for the next meeting or budget-working sessions. The salary-ordinance package passed first reading 8-0.
