Council advances first reading of IT appropriation to update Microsoft licensing and servers

The Columbus Common Council on May 6 approved on first reading an additional appropriation from the Information Services Fund to support a multi-part IT upgrade plan, including Microsoft licensing, server licenses and security tools.
City staff said the request followed an IT assessment conducted after the city’s new director of technology began work. Staff said the largest component—approximately $147,000—would cover Microsoft licensing transfers and software-assurance server licensing to replace systems reaching end-of-life in October. The request also included about $10,000 for consulting to assist migration and funding for a password-management and endpoint-management solution to strengthen security and standardize platforms across departments.
Council members asked about timing and whether additional requests would come forward next year; staff said the upgrade work is part of a multi-year plan covering 2025–27 and that additional appropriations may be needed in future budgets. No members of the public spoke on this appropriation and the council recorded an 8-0 vote on first reading.
