Council clears alley vacation for MLJ Properties redevelopment in East Columbus

The Columbus Common Council on May 6 approved, on second reading, an ordinance vacating recorded alley rights in the Paul’s Place addition so MLJ Properties can consolidate five platted lots for redevelopment.
City planning staff said the alleys in question existed only on the original plat and were never improved or used for utilities. Planning staff reported no city department or utility provider signaled a present or future need for the alleys, clearing the way for the vacation. Eric Meeks attended representing the applicant.
Planning staff displayed an applicant concept of 10 residential units in five structures with small parking areas. The project previously received approval from the Board of Zoning Appeals and staff said the required subdivision plat that formally vacates the alleys had been provided and reviewed by the planning department, making the item ready for the council’s second-reading approval.
Council recorded an 8-0 second-reading vote to finalize the vacation. No members of the public spoke during the public-comment time for this item.
