Board approves Provident insurance renewals for Crown Point EMA and volunteer firefighters

The Crown Point Board of Public Works and Safety on Thursday approved two employer-sponsored accidental occupational injury, illness and death benefit renewals with Provident Insurance: a three-year prepaid renewal for the Crown Point Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and a one-year renewal for Crown Point Fire Rescue volunteer personnel.
Landon, a member of the insurer’s service team, said the EMA renewal is a three-year prepaid offer that raises certain benefit limits and adds dependent and spousal death benefits and expanded impairment and medical expense coverages. Landon presented a three-year prepaid premium of $4,009.54 (the presenter noted this was a multi-year prepaid option to mitigate inflation in premium dollars). The board approved the three-year prepaid agreement on a voice vote.
For Crown Point Fire Rescue volunteers, Landon presented a one-year renewal because the insurer would not extend a three-year option for that group. The recommended plan (labeled Plan 2 in the packet) includes a newly added $10,000 line-of-duty cancer diagnosis benefit and modestly increased income protection benefits. Landon said the premium for the fire department renewal is $12,430 for the one-year policy; the board approved the renewal on a voice vote.
Human Resources staff members Katie and Karen said they had reviewed proposals from ancillary markets and recommended the Provident options as best fitting city needs. The fire chief (present in the meeting) said the line-of-duty cancer benefit provides important peace of mind for personnel.
Both motions carried with no recorded opposition. Staff said the benefits supplement existing coverages and that HR and the service team conducted market outreach before recommending Provident.
