Indiana Landmarks wins approval to restore exterior of 302 E. Clark Street

Indiana Landmarks received a certificate of appropriateness on April 28 from the Crown Point Historic Preservation Commission to perform exterior restoration at 302 East Clark Street, a house the organization closed on the previous week.
Blake, representing the applicant, told the commission Indiana Landmarks will begin exterior stabilization and restoration work that includes masonry repair, a new roof, gutters, cornice and porch repairs, limited window repair and modest landscaping. Blake said the organization plans to complete exterior work first and then seek a buyer or assess options for completing interior rehabilitation.
Blake described the house as "approximately built in ... around 1870," and said the interior is not in great condition but the structure is largely watertight. The commission asked questions about the porch and scope; Blake confirmed the front porch will be restored to its original appearance and that an enclosed screen porch removed earlier will not be replaced.
Commission members moved and seconded a finding-of-facts motion and then a motion to approve the certificate of appropriateness for petition 2506; both passed on a roll call of members present.
Blake said additional work beyond the scope presented will return to the commission for subsequent approvals. Commissioners offered to host an informal site visit or open house when the building is in a safe, stable condition.
The commission’s action allows Indiana Landmarks to begin exterior restoration; future interior work or a sale will determine long-term use and occupancy.
