Council OKs Sigma Palooza downtown concert with conditions on security and parking closures

The Columbia City Council on March 17 approved a special-event operations agreement with Raider Hospitality Company LLC for an outdoor concert (Sigma Palooza) scheduled for May 9, subject to pre-event inspections and safety conditions.
Amy Schneider, director of the Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the event will run from about 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., close Sixth Street between Cherry and Locust, and close the Sixth and Cherry Street parking garage at 5:15 p.m. for a police security sweep. Event organizers said the concert is ticketed and the perimeter will be fenced; the organizer, Jamie Varfero, told council the headliner is a national touring DJ and that the event will be ticket-only.
Council members raised questions about sound and police staffing because the event date overlaps Stop Day activities on another part of campus. Police and event staff said they coordinated staffing and had pre-staged plans; the police department said no officers would be allowed off that day and the department expected to staff both events. The city's special-events approval is contingent on the pre-event inspection and the organizer meeting police stipulations.
Council approved the resolution (council bill 31-25) by roll call; all members present voted yes.
