Lawrence administration announces death of Detective Michael McKenna; memorial planned

Leandre, speaking for the administration, said McKenna served the Lawrence Police Department “with honor, dedication, compassion for over 17 years.” Leandre said McKenna was known for “kindness, integrity, and deep respect” for people he encountered. The administration advised council members to contact Chief Bixby or Chief Klein for questions about McKenna’s service and the department’s arrangements.
Why it matters: the death of an active-duty detective touches public safety personnel and community members who worked with the officer. The administration provided the date, time and location for a public memorial so colleagues and residents may attend.
The administration also said questions about McKenna’s service may be directed to the Lawrence Police Department leadership.
