Council recognizes March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month after presentation from advisory council

Macy Pohl, president of the Lawrence Advisory Council on Disabilities (LACD), described the council’s three-year strategic planning, community needs assessment and partnership work with businesses and the city during the Common Council’s March 19 meeting.
Pohl said LACD’s mission focuses on making events and services more accessible for individuals with disabilities and their caregivers. She described the council’s annual resource fair scheduled for May 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fort Benjamin Harrison Library, a sensory-friendly egg hunt at the spring fling (April 19) and partnerships with city events to provide accessible spaces and services. Pohl said LACD meetings are held virtually via Microsoft Teams and are open to the public.
After Pohl’s presentation the council considered Resolution 1, 2025, “recognizing the month of March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in the City of Lawrence.” The clerk read the full resolution into the record, and Councilor Chavis moved to approve. Councilor Jennings seconded. The council voted unanimously to adopt Resolution 1, 2025.
Councilors praised LACD’s events and encouraged constituent participation in the resource fair and other programs. The resolution takes effect upon council passage and approval by the mayor.
